Short answer

In Nashville, several Catholic communities pray under someone else's roof. The Maronite mission of St Sharbel, whose Liturgy includes Aramaic, has gathered since February 2025 on the campus of Aquinas College, by the generosity of the Dominican Sisters. The Syro-Malabar mission of St Teresa of Calcutta, its website says, celebrates its Sunday Holy Qurbana at St Pius X, a Latin parish church. And at the Korean Martyrs church in Donelson, a Romanian community has its own early Mass on Sunday, three hours before the Korean one.

For people in their twenties, the diocese's University Catholic started at Vanderbilt in 2006 and now says it has a presence on fourteen campuses across Middle Tennessee.

Sixteen places are listed below, each with an address and a link to its own page or its diocese's. They are not every parish in Tennessee; they are the places whose pages we could open and read.

This page belongs to cana.love, a free site for people who hope to marry. Catholics are not its only members, and a section below explains why.

Catholics in Tennessee

The state has three dioceses, one for each of the grand divisions its flag marks with three stars: Nashville in the middle, Knoxville in the east, created in 1988, and Memphis in the west, created in 1971. The websites of the Nashville and Knoxville dioceses answered us with a bot check, so there we worked from their newspapers and from parish pages.

Nashville's cathedral runs a Bible study for young adults every Monday evening, divided into men's, women's and mixed groups, with a monthly happy hour. Knoxville's cathedral keeps chat groups for young adults, including one for Catholic singles.

Memphis is the most varied on a single Sunday. At Sacred Heart in Midtown, the morning Masses are in English, Vietnamese and Spanish, one after the other; St Ann in Bartlett has a Mass in Polish on the first Sunday of the month; St Theresa the Little Flower lists its Sunday Masses in Latin and English.

Where the community gathers

The sixteen places are spread over four areas: Nashville and Middle Tennessee, Knoxville and the north-east, Chattanooga, and Memphis.

Nashville and Middle Tennessee

Nashville and Middle Tennessee hold eight. The Cathedral of the Incarnation has its Monday young adult Bible study, and University Catholic celebrates its Sunday night Mass there; St Martha's in Ashland City has a Sunday Latin Mass in the traditional form; the Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia welcome guests to Mass at their motherhouse; St Sharbel, the Korean Martyrs church and the Syro-Malabar mission are the Eastern and Korean communities; and University Catholic has a house at Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro.

Knoxville and the north-east

Knoxville and the north-east hold two: the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Knoxville, and St Mary's in Johnson City, with a Sunday afternoon Mass in Latin.

Chattanooga

Chattanooga holds one: the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul downtown, a church of 1890.

Memphis

Memphis holds five: the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, St Theresa the Little Flower, Sacred Heart, St Peter with the national shrine of St Martin de Porres, and St Ann in Bartlett.

Some places appear without a card. The Church of the Assumption in Nashville, the bishop's designated home for the older Missal, is closed until further notice because of construction and fire-safety concerns. St John XXIII serves the University of Tennessee, and a retreat centre in Benton holds a monthly Mass in the 1962 Missal, but we could not confirm their addresses or times from their own pages.

Distances that decide everything

Nashville

Knoxville

Johnson City

A diagram, not a map. Driving times, as in the text.

Around Nashville distances are short: Donelson is a quarter of an hour from the cathedral, Ashland City about half an hour and Murfreesboro three quarters of an hour. Knoxville is around three hours east on I-40, Chattanooga about two hours from Knoxville, and Johnson City about two hours beyond Knoxville. Memphis is more than three hours west, and Bartlett twenty-five minutes from its cathedral.

So Tennessee's Catholics live in three separate worlds, much as the stars on its flag suggest. Inside Middle Tennessee, or inside Memphis, two people can meet on a weeknight; between them, it is a weekend.

The cana.love profile carries your home town and whether you would move, so the distance is clear before anyone writes.

Dating as a practising Catholic in Tennessee

A Maronite Liturgy with Aramaic, a Syro-Malabar Qurbana, a Korean parish, a Vietnamese Mass and the old rite in Ashland City: Catholics in Tennessee worship in many forms. cana.love leaves room for yours.

Mass, fasting and Scripture, each asked

On the form, Mass attendance has five answers, from every week to rarely; fasting and Scripture are separate questions, and so is what you hope to find. Each answer has its own setting for who can see it.

Parish and meaning, in your own words

Two things you write yourself: your parish, and what gives your life meaning. No list could capture a state where one person's parish is a Maronite mission on a college campus and another's is a Newman house in Murfreesboro.

Spanish is one of five languages

The site runs in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Russian.

Checked first, free, no password

Every profile and photo is reviewed before it can be seen, first by software and then by a member of staff when the software is unsure. The rules forbid asking members for money, and fraud ends an account permanently, without a warning. It costs nothing, has no subscription and uses no password: you sign in with a one-time link or code sent by email.

What cana.love is and is not

cana.love is not a Catholic-only platform.

It includes Orthodox Christians, Protestants and people still finding their church, provided they want the same kind of marriage, and your settings decide who sees you. Tennessee's Catholic communities pray with Aramaic, Korean, Vietnamese, Polish and Spanish as well as English, and a site that closed its door to others would be narrower than they are. Its commitment is easy to check: faith, practice and intentions are on every profile, to read before you answer. It is run by Cana SpA, registered in Chile; see the About page.

Meeting safely

  • Make the first meeting a daylight one, in public, with a time to leave agreed: coffee after Mass, a café in the Gulch in Nashville or on Cooper Street in Memphis. Tell a friend the place and, for a drive on I-40 at night, when you expect to be back. Keep your address private for now.
  • On money, one rule: before you meet in person, do not send any, lend any or pay for anyone's travel, however the request is made. We look into it after a single report.

The community guidelines explain what happens after a report and how to appeal.
