Short answer
About an hour west of Charleston, down a country road near Walterboro, stands St James the Greater at Catholic Hill. The parish says it was founded in 1826, and in September 2026 it marked two hundred years.
After its church burned in 1856, the Catholics there went on for more than forty years without a priest or a church building. In the parish's own words, they were "guided by the powerful leadership of Vincent de Paul Davis, a formerly enslaved catechist who kept the flame of Catholic faith alive", and many of today's parishioners are their descendants. The faith passed from parents to children when no one else was there to pass it on, and Mass is still celebrated there every Sunday.
Twenty-one places are listed below, each with an address and a link to its own page or its diocese's: Catholic Hill and Mepkin Abbey, the cathedral and Charleston's parish of 1789, young adult groups that name their ages, parishes with the Latin Mass, a Maronite church, Vietnamese and Spanish-speaking parishes, and the Catholic ministries at the Citadel, USC, Clemson and Winthrop. They are not every parish; they are the places whose pages we could read.
This page is from cana.love, a free site for people who want to marry. Catholics are not its only members, and a later section explains.
Catholics in South Carolina
The whole state is one diocese, the Diocese of Charleston, created in 1820. Its main website refused automated visitors, but its parish directory was open, so many cards below link to it.
Young adult groups name their ages: at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, single and married young adults aged twenty-one to thirty-five; at the Basilica of St Peter in Columbia, young professionals in their twenties and thirties, and a bilingual Spanglish group for ages eighteen to thirty-five. Our Lady of the Rosary in Greenville has Social Disciples, open to young adults who are single, engaged or married.
From the diocese's directory and the parishes' own pages, opened 24 September 2026
The Latin Mass is found in several places. Prince of Peace in Taylors celebrates it every weekday at noon and allows weddings in either the Ordinary or the Extraordinary Form; the diocese lists a Tridentine Mass on Sunday evenings at Stella Maris on Sullivan's Island, and Latin Masses at Sacred Heart in Charleston and Our Lady of the Lake in Chapin.
The Eastern Catholic parish on this page is St Rafka in Greer, a Maronite church whose families first came to the Greenville area for work in the textile mills. Vietnamese Masses are celebrated from Greer to North Charleston and Rock Hill, and San Sebastian in Greenville worships entirely in Spanish.

Some places appear without a card. The Catholic ministry at the College of Charleston has a website that refused automated visitors. Coastal Carolina's Catholic student centre in Conway has Mass on Sunday and Wednesday evenings, but its address could not be matched to a building. St Martin de Porres in Columbia has Vietnamese Masses on some Saturdays and Sundays.
Distances that decide everything
A diagram, not a map. Driving times, as in the text.
Around Charleston, the cathedral, St Mary and Sacred Heart are within minutes of each other, and Sullivan's Island and North Charleston within half an hour. Mepkin Abbey is about an hour north, and Catholic Hill a little over an hour west.
Columbia is about two hours from Charleston, and Greenville under two hours from Columbia. Rock Hill is a little over an hour north of Columbia, close to Charlotte. In the Upstate, Taylors, Greer and Greenville are within twenty minutes of each other.
So Catholic South Carolina is a triangle, the Lowcountry, the Midlands and the Upstate, with each side a drive of a couple of hours. Inside each corner, two people can meet on a weeknight; between corners, it takes a Saturday.
On cana.love, where you live and whether you would move are both on the form, so the triangle is clear from the first message.

Dating as a practising Catholic in South Carolina
A Maronite Liturgy in Greer, a Latin Mass in Taylors, a Vietnamese Mass in North Charleston and Sunday Mass at Catholic Hill: Catholics in South Carolina pray in many ways. cana.love asks which is yours.
Mass, fasting and Scripture, each asked
Mass attendance is asked on a five-point scale, from weekly to rarely. Fasting, Scripture and what you hope for from the site are separate questions, and you decide who sees each answer.
Parish and meaning, in your own words
Parish and meaning are written in your own words, because a two-hundred-year-old country parish and a campus ministry at Clemson do not belong on the same list.
Spanish is one of five languages
The site is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Russian.

What cana.love is and is not
cana.love is not a Catholic-only platform.
Orthodox, Protestant and seeking Christians are welcome too, when they want the same kind of marriage, and your privacy settings decide who finds you. South Carolina's Catholic parishes pray in Spanish, Vietnamese and Arabic as well as English, and a site that shut people out would be narrower than they are. What it promises is visible: every profile lists faith, practice and intentions, to be read before you reply. Cana SpA, a company in Chile, runs the site; the About page says more.
Meeting safely
- Keep the first meeting to daylight and a public place, with a time to leave: coffee after Mass, a café on King Street in Charleston or on Main Street in Greenville. Tell a friend where you will be and, if the drive home is I-26 after dark, when you will be back. Your address can wait.
- On money there is one rule: until you have met in person, send nothing, lend nothing and pay for no one's travel, whatever the story. A single report is enough for us to look.
What happens after a report, and how to appeal, is in the community guidelines.
