Short answer

The Grotto in Portland began with a promise made for a mother. As its own history tells it, a boy in Kitchener, Ontario, learned that his mother lay near death after giving birth to a daughter. He ran to the parish church and prayed to the Virgin Mary, promising that if she were spared he would one day undertake a great work for the Church. Both his mother and his baby sister survived.

The boy became Father Ambrose Mayer of the Servite order. In Portland he found land that had once been a railroad quarry beneath a basalt cliff, and in 1924 he founded there the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother. Today couples marry at the Grotto on Saturday afternoons, outdoors on its plaza from June to September.

Twenty places are listed below, each with an address and a link to its own page or its diocese's: the Grotto and the cathedral, three parishes with the Latin Mass, young adult groups that name their ages, a Maronite church, Mount Angel Abbey on its hill, the Newman centres of Oregon State and the University of Oregon, and parishes across the Cascades. They are not every parish; they are the places whose pages we could read.

cana.love, which published this page, is free and exists for people who want to marry. It is open beyond the Catholic Church; one section below explains.

Catholics in Oregon

Oregon has two dioceses: the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, west of the Cascades, and the Diocese of Baker, which covers the east. Both dioceses' websites refused automated visitors, so every place below comes from its own parish, abbey or campus page.

Portland keeps the Latin Mass in more than one form. At Holy Rosary, the Dominican friars celebrate their Latin Masses in the Dominican Rite; St Stephen and St Birgitta offer the traditional Latin Mass of the 1962 Missal, St Stephen for nearly all its Masses. Sacred Heart in Medford has a Latin Mass on Sunday afternoons.

1882the year monks from Engelberg in Switzerland founded Mount Angel

From the Grotto's, the abbey's and the parishes' own pages, opened 24 September 2026

Young adult groups name their own ages, and no two are the same: eighteen to thirty-nine at the cathedral, twenty-two to thirty-five for ARK at St Michael, eighteen to thirty at Forest Grove, eighteen to thirty-two in Bend, with a separate group there for people in their thirties.

Several parishes pray in other languages. At the Grotto, the two o'clock Sunday Mass turns by the week through Filipino, Spanish and Indonesian; St Stanislaus has Masses in Polish and, once a month, in Croatian; Our Lady of La Vang in Happy Valley is a Vietnamese parish; and Spanish Masses run from Keizer to Bend and Baker City.

Distances that decide everything

A valley with a city at its head
The Grotto
under 20 min
Cathedral
about 1 hour
Mount Angel

A diagram, not a map. Driving times, as in the text.

Inside Portland, the places on this page are close: the Grotto is under twenty minutes from the cathedral, and Our Lady of La Vang and the University of Portland are within half an hour of the Grotto. Mount Angel is about an hour south of the city.

Corvallis is about an hour and a half from Portland and Eugene about two hours. Bend, over the Cascades, is more than three hours from Portland, and Baker City and Medford more than four.

So Catholic Oregon is a valley with a city at its head, and a much larger east. Inside Portland, two people can meet after work; from Portland to Bend or Baker City, it is a weekend.

cana.love asks where you live and whether you would move, and puts both on the form, so the Cascades are no surprise.

Dating as a practising Catholic in Oregon

A Dominican Latin Mass at Holy Rosary, the Hours at Mount Angel, a Polish Mass on Interstate Avenue and an Indonesian Mass at the Grotto: Catholics in Oregon pray in many ways. cana.love asks which is yours.

Mass, fasting and Scripture, each asked

How often you go to Mass is asked on a five-point scale, from every Sunday to seldom. Fasting, Scripture and your reasons for joining are separate questions, and each answer can be shown or kept private.

Parish and meaning, in your own words

Parish and meaning are your own words, not a menu choice; a Servite sanctuary in Portland and a Benedictine hilltop in the valley would never fit one list.

Spanish is one of five languages

The site works in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Russian.

Checked first, free, no password

Profiles and photos are held back until reviewed, first by software and then, if needed, by a member of staff. What cana.love is and is not

cana.love is not a Catholic-only platform.

Orthodox Christians, Protestants and those still searching are welcome as well, when they hope for the same kind of marriage, and your settings control who sees you. Oregon's Catholic parishes pray in Spanish, Vietnamese, Polish, Filipino and Indonesian as well as English, and a site that closed its door would be narrower than they are. What it promises you can check: every profile shows faith, practice and intentions, to be read first. Cana SpA, a company registered in Chile, operates it; see the About page.

Meeting safely

  • Keep the first meeting to daylight and a public place, with a time agreed to leave: coffee after Mass, a café on Alberta Street in Portland or near the campus in Eugene. Tell a friend where you are going and, for I-5 or the pass over the Cascades after dark, when you will be back. Your address can wait.
  • About money, one rule: until you meet in person, send nothing, lend nothing and pay for no one's travel, whatever you are told. One report is enough for us to act.

The community guidelines explain what happens after a report and how to appeal.
