Short answer

On 24 September 2017, Pope Francis told the crowd in St Peter's Square that the day before, in Oklahoma City, Stanley Francis Rother had been beatified: a missionary priest, in the Pope's words, killed in hatred of the faith for his work of evangelisation and for the poorest. Born in Okarche, Rother served parishes across Oklahoma, among them Tulsa's Holy Family Cathedral, before he was killed in 1981 as pastor of a church in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. The cathedral in Tulsa keeps a first-class relic of him.

Oklahoma's two dioceses, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, share him: the beatification in one, the relic in the other.

Fourteen places are listed below, each with an address and a link to its own page or its diocese's: two parishes of the traditional Latin Mass with young adult groups, a Benedictine abbey that sings the old rite, the student parish at the University of Oklahoma, Maronite and Syro-Malabar communities, a Mass in the Zomi language, and a church in north Tulsa founded after the Race Massacre. They are not every parish; they are the places whose pages we could read.

cana.love, the site behind this page, is free and made for people who want to marry. It welcomes more than Catholics, and a later section says why.

Catholics in Oklahoma

The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City covers the west and centre of the state and the Diocese of Tulsa and Eastern Oklahoma the east. Most of the archdiocese's parish websites refused automated visitors, so the Oklahoma City side of this page is thinner than we would like; Tulsa's parishes were open.

Two parishes of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter say whom their young adult groups are for. At St Damien in Edmond, the group is for Catholic men and women, single or married, aged eighteen to thirty; at Most Precious Blood in Tulsa, for unmarried parishioners aged eighteen to thirty-five. Clear Creek Abbey, in rural Cherokee country east of Tulsa, sings its daily High Mass in Latin according to the 1962 Missal, with the approval of the Holy See.

Several parishes pray in other languages. At St James the Greater in Oklahoma City, four of the seven weekend Masses are in Spanish and the Sunday late-morning Mass is signed in ASL; St Catherine in west Tulsa has its Sunday Mass in Zomi; St Clement in Bixby calls itself bilingual.

Where the community gathers

The fourteen places fall into three parts of the state: Oklahoma City and Edmond, Norman, and Tulsa with the country east of it.

Oklahoma City and Edmond

Oklahoma City and Edmond hold three: St Damien in Edmond, St James the Greater, and the Syro-Malabar parish of the Holy Family.

Norman

Norman holds three: St Thomas More, the University of Oklahoma's parish, Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Mission, and St Mark the Evangelist, where the Maronite liturgy was first celebrated in 2007.

Tulsa and the east

Tulsa and the east hold eight: Holy Family Cathedral, Most Precious Blood, St Monica in north Tulsa, St Catherine, the Church of the Madalene, St Clement in Bixby, St Henry in Owasso and Clear Creek Abbey near Hulbert.

Some places appear without a card. The Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in south Oklahoma City has a website that refused automated visitors, so we could not confirm its address or Masses from its own page. Prague, an hour east of Oklahoma City, has the National Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague in the Czech settlers' church of St Wenceslaus.

Distances that decide everything

A diagram, not a map. Driving times, as in the text.

Norman is about half an hour south of Oklahoma City, and St Damien in Edmond about three quarters of an hour north. Tulsa is around two hours north-east of Oklahoma City on the turnpike, and Clear Creek Abbey about an hour east of Tulsa. Around Tulsa, the parishes on this page are within about twenty-five minutes of each other.

So Catholic Oklahoma has two centres, Oklahoma City with Norman and Edmond, and Tulsa. Inside each, two people can meet on a weeknight; between them, it takes planning.

The cana.love form asks where you live and whether you would move, so the distance is clear from the start.

Dating as a practising Catholic in Oklahoma

A Maronite Liturgy in Norman, the Syro-Malabar Qurbana in Oklahoma City, a Mass in Zomi in Tulsa and the old rite at Clear Creek: Catholics in Oklahoma pray in many ways. cana.love asks which is yours.

Mass, fasting and Scripture, each asked

The form asks how often you are at Mass, on a scale of five running down from every Sunday; it asks separately about fasting, about Scripture and about what you hope for, and each answer can be shown or hidden.

Parish and meaning, in your own words

Parish and meaning go in your own words; an abbey in the Cherokee hills and a student parish in Norman would not fit one list.

Spanish is one of five languages

The site is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Russian.

Checked first, free, no password

Before any profile or photo goes live it is reviewed, automatically and then by hand when needed. The rules forbid asking members for money; fraud means removal for good, with no warning. No fee, no renewal and no password: sign-in happens through a one-time link or code in your email.

What cana.love is and is not

cana.love is not a Catholic-only platform.

The site also serves Orthodox Christians, Protestants and those still between churches, provided they seek the same kind of marriage, and you choose who can see you. Oklahoma's Catholic parishes pray in Spanish, Zomi and Malayalam as well as English, and a site that shut its door would be narrower than they are. Its one promise is visible: every profile carries faith, practice and intentions for you to read first. Cana SpA, a company in Chile, operates it; the About page has the rest.

Meeting safely

  • For a first meeting choose daylight and a public place, and agree a time to leave: coffee after Mass, a café on Campus Corner in Norman or in the Tulsa Arts District. Tell a friend where you will be and, for the turnpike after dark, when you expect to be back. Keep your address to yourself for now.
  • Money follows one rule: nothing sent, lent or paid for travel before you have met face to face, whatever the story. We look into it after one report.

Reports, and appeals against decisions, are covered in the community guidelines.
