Short answer
In Massachusetts the second language of the Mass is Portuguese, and it belongs to two different worlds. One is the older Portuguese and Azorean community: at Santo Christo in Fall River three of the four Sunday Masses are in Portuguese, and at St Anthony in Cambridge four of the five weekend Masses. The other is Brazilian. The Apostolado Brasileiro of the Archdiocese of Boston, founded in 1987, says it began because Brazilians who went to the Portuguese Masses had not been able to adapt to the European way they were celebrated.
The young adult groups here are also precise about who they are for. The Harvard Catholic Center runs one Gospel group for ages twenty-two to twenty-nine and another for people in their thirties; St Clement near Fenway is for twenty to twenty-nine; St Columbkille in Brighton for eighteen to thirty-five.
Twenty-two places are listed below with an address and an official link, from Boston to the Berkshires and Cape Cod. They are not every parish; they are places whose own pages, or their diocese's, we could read.
You are on cana.love, a free site for people who want to marry. It is not a Catholic-only site, and a section below explains what that means.
Catholics in Massachusetts
The state has four dioceses: the Archdiocese of Boston and the dioceses of Worcester, Springfield and Fall River. The first three have main websites that answered us with a bot check, so we worked from what else they publish.
Boston's evangelisation office keeps a list of about twenty young adult communities across the archdiocese, from Reading and Peabody to Dedham and Wellesley. Springfield runs a young adult network called Young and Catholic, founded in 2021 for people from eighteen to forty, with chapters around Springfield, in the Pioneer Valley and in the Berkshires. Fall River publishes its list town by town, with an age range for nearly every group.

Two Eastern Catholic churches in Boston carry long histories of their own. The Maronite parish of Our Lady of the Cedars says Boston is the birthplace of the Maronite Church in the United States, dating it to a priest's arrival in 1893; the Melkite cathedral in West Roxbury dates its parish to 1910 in the South End.
Where the community gathers
The twenty-two places fall into five parts of the state: Boston and its neighbours; Worcester and the centre; the west, from Springfield to the Berkshires; the South Coast; and Cape Cod.
Boston and its neighbours
Boston and its neighbours hold ten. The Cathedral of the Holy Cross has Masses in English and Spanish and in the traditional form on Sunday. St Clement's young adults meet on Monday evenings near Fenway; St Columbkille's in Brighton gather around a Sunday evening Mass; the Catholic Center at Northeastern serves students from the surrounding colleges too. In Cambridge, the Harvard Catholic Center has groups by decade and St Anthony serves Portuguese and Brazilian families. Mary Immaculate of Lourdes in Newton celebrates both forms of the Mass; the Melkite cathedral is in West Roxbury and the Maronite parish in Jamaica Plain; and St Adelaide in Peabody combines a Sunday Latin Mass with a North Shore young adult group.
Worcester and the centre
Worcester and the centre hold three: the Mass at the College of the Holy Cross, which says everyone is welcome; the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Assumption University; and the Institute of Christ the King's oratory in Warren, between Worcester and Springfield.
The west
The west holds four: St Michael's Cathedral in Springfield, where college Catholics meet twice a month in the crypt church; the Newman Center at UMass Amherst; Our Lady of the Valley in Easthampton, which calls itself the home of the diocese's Latin Mass community; and the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge.
The South Coast
The South Coast holds four: the cathedral in Fall River, built of local granite in the 1850s; Santo Christo nearby; Newman House at UMass Dartmouth, which is open to young adults who are not students; and the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro.
Cape Cod
Cape Cod holds one: WAVE, a young adult group at Corpus Christi in East Sandwich.

Some places are named without a card. MIT's Catholic community and Boston University's Catholic center are near the Harvard and Northeastern ones; the Latin Mass on Cape Cod is at Sacred Heart Chapel in Yarmouth Port, which has no house number we could confirm; and the Portuguese parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in New Bedford had a website closed to us.
Distances that decide everything
A diagram, not a map. Driving times without traffic.
Boston to Worcester is about an hour, and Worcester to Springfield a little more; Springfield to Pittsfield is an hour and a quarter. South of Boston, Fall River is an hour away and New Bedford twenty minutes beyond it; Hyannis is about an hour and a half from Boston. From the Berkshires to the Cape is more than four hours.
So most of Catholic Massachusetts lives within an hour of Boston, and two people in Cambridge and Peabody, or Brighton and Newton, can meet any evening. The west and the Cape are separate trips.
The cana.love form asks where you live and whether you would move; both answers are there before anyone writes.

Dating as a practising Catholic in Massachusetts
Portuguese Masses in Fall River, a Brazilian community in Cambridge, a Melkite Liturgy in West Roxbury and a Latin Mass in Warren: Massachusetts Catholics pray in many ways. cana.love asks which is yours rather than guessing.
Mass, fasting and Scripture, each asked
The form asks how often you go to Mass, with five answers from every Sunday down to rarely, and asks separately about fasting and about Scripture. It asks what you are on the site for, and you decide who may see each answer.
Parish and meaning, in your own words
Two questions are open for your own words: your parish, and what gives your life meaning. A list would not work for a state where one person's parish is a Maronite church in Jamaica Plain and another's is a Newman center in Amherst.
Portuguese is one of five languages
The site runs in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Russian. In a state where so many Masses are in Portuguese, and in two different accents, that matters.
Checked first, free, no password
Nothing on a profile, photographs included, is visible until it has been checked: automatically first, then by a person when the automatic check is unsure. The rules forbid asking members for money, and fraud ends in permanent removal without warning. Joining is free, there is no subscription, and no password; a one-time link or code comes by email.
What cana.love is and is not
cana.love is not a Catholic-only platform.
Orthodox Christians and Protestants are members too, and people still finding their way, provided they want the same kind of marriage; your settings decide who sees you. The parishes on this page welcome newcomers in several languages, and a site that closed its doors would be narrower than they are. What cana.love commits to can be checked: faith, practice and intentions are on the form, and the answers are there to read before you reply. It is run by Cana SpA, a company in Chile; the About page has more.
Meeting safely
- Keep the first meeting public and in daylight, with a time agreed to leave: coffee after Mass, a café in Harvard Square or on Newbury Street. Tell a friend where you will be, and if it means the Mass Pike or the Cape traffic, when you expect to be home. Your address can wait.
- On money there is one answer. Until you have met in person, send nothing, lend nothing and pay for no one's ticket, however it is presented. A single report is enough for us to look into it.
The community guidelines set out how reports are handled and how to appeal a decision.
Common questions
Are there young adult groups for my age?
Several name one: St Clement twenty to twenty-nine, Harvard twenty-two to twenty-nine and a separate group for the thirties, St Columbkille eighteen to thirty-five, Newman House eighteen to thirty-five and WAVE eighteen to thirty. Springfield's Young and Catholic network is for eighteen to forty.
Are there Masses in Portuguese?
Yes. Santo Christo in Fall River and St Anthony in Cambridge celebrate most of their Masses in Portuguese, and the Apostolado Brasileiro serves Brazilian communities around Boston.
Where is the traditional Latin Mass?
On this page: the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Mary Immaculate of Lourdes in Newton, St Adelaide in Peabody, the oratory in Warren and Our Lady of the Valley in Easthampton.
Are there Eastern Catholic churches?
The Melkite cathedral in West Roxbury and the Maronite parish of Our Lady of the Cedars in Jamaica Plain.
Is there anything on Cape Cod?
Yes. WAVE, a young adult group for ages eighteen to thirty, meets at Corpus Christi in East Sandwich, and there is a Sunday Latin Mass at Sacred Heart Chapel in Yarmouth Port.
Can I use cana.love anywhere in Massachusetts?
Yes, from eighteen. It is a website; there is nothing to install.
Next steps
Find a group that names your age: St Clement on a Monday, Harvard's Gospel group on a Sunday, or Newman House on a Thursday. If Portuguese is your language, go to Mass at Santo Christo or St Anthony. And if you would rather know where someone stands before the first coffee than after it, make a profile on cana.love: it is free, and it asks what a parish social does not.
