Short answer

In Atchison, above the Missouri River, two Benedictine monasteries stand two miles apart. The monks of St Benedict's Abbey date their founding to 1857; the sisters of Mount St Scholastica came to the town in 1863. Each community built a college, and on 1 July 1971 the two colleges merged into one, Benedictine College. Its patrons, the college writes, are a brother and a sister, Saints Benedict and Scholastica, who were twins.

Students still go to Mass in the abbey church, and the college says the Abbey Lookout over the river has been "the site of many Raven marriage proposals over the years", Ravens being what it calls its own.

Seventeen places are listed below, each with an address and a link to its own page or its diocese's: the abbey and the college, the University of Kansas's Catholic centre, two communities of the traditional Latin Mass, parishes that pray in Spanish and Vietnamese, the Wichita cathedral where Venerable Emil Kapaun is buried, and a basilica on the plains. They are not every parish; they are the places whose pages we could read.

cana.love, which publishes this page, is a free site for people who mean to marry. It is open to more than Catholics, and one section below gives the reason.

Catholics in Kansas

Kansas has four dioceses: the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas in the north-east, and the dioceses of Wichita, Salina and Dodge City. The archdiocese, Salina, Dodge City and most Wichita parishes run websites that turned away automated visitors, so the Wichita places here rest on the diocese's own parish directory, which lists the Masses and their languages for every parish, and the west of the state has a single card.

Two communities of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter celebrate only the traditional Latin Mass: St Rose Philippine Duchesne in Westwood, a personal parish of the archdiocese that opened in 2013, and the St John Vianney chaplaincy at Maple Hill, west of Topeka. At Atchison, the college's early Sunday Mass in the abbey's Guadalupe Chapel is in the Extraordinary Form.

Spanish is heard across the state. Of the ninety-three parishes in the Wichita directory, fourteen list Masses in Spanish and two in Vietnamese. At Blessed Sacrament in Kansas City, Kansas, three of the four weekend Masses are in Spanish.

In Wichita, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception keeps the tomb of Father Emil Kapaun, a priest of the diocese and an army chaplain in Korea. His remains were identified in 2021 and brought to the cathedral that year, and in 2025 the Holy See declared him Venerable.

Where the community gathers

Some places appear without a card. Mount St Scholastica, the sisters' monastery in Atchison, offers tours by appointment but posts no public Mass. Pilsen, about an hour and a half north-east of Wichita, is where Father Kapaun's faith was first formed and where he served his first years as a priest. K-State's St Isidore's in Manhattan, the cathedrals of Salina and Dodge City and St Peter's Cathedral in Kansas City, Kansas, have websites that refused automated visitors, so we could not read their Masses.

Distances that decide everything

A long state
Atchison
about 1 hour
Kansas City
around 3 hours
Wichita
around 3 hours
Victoria

A diagram, not a map. Driving times, as in the text.

Atchison is about an hour north-west of Kansas City, Kansas; the college calls itself forty-five miles north of the city. Lawrence and Topeka are about half an hour apart, and Maple Hill is half an hour past Topeka. The two Latin Mass communities, Westwood and Maple Hill, are about an hour and a half apart.

Wichita is around three hours from Kansas City, and Victoria around three hours from Wichita and more than four from Kansas City. Inside Wichita, the parishes on this page are within ten minutes of the cathedral.

Catholic Kansas is long: the north-east is a single evening's drive, Wichita a drive of its own, and the plains a weekend away from both.

On cana.love, where you live and whether you would move are part of the form, so distance is settled before the first message.

Dating as a practising Catholic in Kansas

Vespers with the Atchison monks, a Vietnamese Mass in Wichita, a sung Latin Mass at Maple Hill and a Spanish Mass in Kansas City: Catholics in Kansas pray in many ways. cana.love asks which is yours.

Mass, fasting and Scripture, each asked

The form asks how often you go to Mass, from every week down to seldom, on five steps. Fasting, Scripture and what you hope for from the site are separate questions, and each answer can be public or kept back.

Parish and meaning, in your own words

Your parish and what gives your life meaning are written, not picked: an abbey on the Missouri and a campus centre in Lawrence do not belong in one list.

Spanish is one of five languages

There are five languages on the site: English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Russian.

Checked first, free, no password

A new profile or photo is not shown until it has been checked, by software first and, where needed, by a person. Asking other members for money is against the rules, and fraud ends an account at once and for good. Nothing is charged, nothing renews, and there is no password: you sign in with a one-time link or code sent to your email.

What cana.love is and is not

cana.love is not a Catholic-only platform.

It is also for Orthodox Christians, Protestants and people still finding their church, as long as they want the same kind of marriage, and your settings decide who sees you. The parishes of Kansas pray in Spanish and Vietnamese as well as English, and a site with a closed door would be narrower than they are. What it promises can be checked on any profile: faith, practice and intentions are written there to be read first. The operator is Cana SpA, a company registered in Chile; more is on the About page.

Meeting safely

  • Meet the first time by day, somewhere public, with an agreed time to go home: coffee after Mass, a café on Massachusetts Street in Lawrence or in Old Town in Wichita. Let a friend know where you are, and, if the drive home is I-70 or the turnpike at night, when you should be back. Your address can stay private for now.
  • Money has one rule: until you have met in person, send nothing, lend nothing and buy no one's ticket, however urgent the reason. A single report is enough for us to look.

What happens after a report, and how to appeal, is set out in the community guidelines.
