Short answer

Indiana tells the time twice. Most of the state keeps Eastern time, but the north-west corner around Gary and the south-west corner around Evansville keep Central, and the Catholic Church there prints it. The Diocese of Evansville's yearbook marks many of its parishes' schedules "All times Eastern" or "All times Central Time", and its list of Spanish Masses puts "Hora Este" and "Hora Centro" side by side. St Joseph in Dale is on Central time; St Ferdinand, fifteen minutes away, is on Eastern.

For anyone arranging a first coffee after Mass across that line, the hour on the schedule is not always your hour.

Twenty places are listed below, each with an address and a link to its own page or its diocese's: Notre Dame's basilica, young adult groups that name their ages, three parishes of the traditional Latin Mass, a Melkite Liturgy, and Masses in Spanish, Polish, Vietnamese and French, with a Filipino Mass once a month. They are not every parish in Indiana; they are the places whose pages we could read.

This is cana.love, a free site for people who hope to marry. Catholics are not its only members, and a section below says why.

Catholics in Indiana

The state has five dioceses: the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, and the dioceses of Fort Wayne–South Bend, Gary, Lafayette and Evansville. Gary's whole territory, from Lake County to Starke, lies west of the time-zone line. The Lafayette diocese's site and the campus sites we tried there were closed to automated visitors, so it has no card on this page.

Several young adult groups say plainly whom they are for. St John the Evangelist in downtown Indianapolis, named a hub for young adult ministry in 2009, welcomes ages eighteen to thirty-five; the young adults at the basilica in Vincennes are eighteen to thirty-nine; Rooted in Newburgh is nineteen to thirty-nine, married or single.

The traditional Latin Mass is celebrated every Sunday by the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter at St Stanislaus in South Bend and at Sacred Heart in Fort Wayne, and by the Institute of Christ the King at the Polish shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Merrillville. Sacred Heart in Evansville also lists a Sunday Latin Mass at noon.

Where the community gathers

The twenty places fall into four parts of the state: Indianapolis, the north-east from Fort Wayne to South Bend, the north-west around Gary, and the south-west around Evansville.

Indianapolis

Indianapolis holds three: St John the Evangelist downtown, with its young adults and college students; the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, with a Filipino Mass once a month; and St Monica, with Masses in English, Spanish and, once a month, French.

Fort Wayne and South Bend

The north-east holds seven: the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame and the Melkite Liturgy on the same campus; St Stanislaus and Saints Casimir and Adalbert in South Bend; and in Fort Wayne, Sacred Heart, St Patrick with its English, Vietnamese and Spanish Masses, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Gary and the north-west

The north-west holds four, all on Central time: the shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Merrillville, the Cathedral of the Holy Angels in Gary, the Catholic student center at Valparaiso, and St Margaret Mary in Hammond.

Evansville and the south-west

The south-west holds six: the Basilica of St Francis Xavier in Vincennes, St John the Baptist in Newburgh, St Benedict Cathedral and Sacred Heart in Evansville, the Catholic ministry at the University of Southern Indiana, and St Joseph in Dale.

Distances that decide everything

A diagram, not a map. Driving times, as in the text.

Indianapolis to Fort Wayne is about two hours, to Vincennes about two and a half, and to Notre Dame, Gary or Evansville around three. Notre Dame to Gary is a little over an hour, and Fort Wayne to Notre Dame about two. Inside each region distances are short: Gary to Merrillville a quarter of an hour, Evansville to Newburgh the same.

So Catholic Indiana is four regions with Indianapolis in the middle, and two of them keep a different hour. A couple in South Bend and Gary share a drive of an hour and a clock that differs by one.

The cana.love form asks where you live and whether you would move, so the distance, and the time zone, are clear from the start.

Dating as a practising Catholic in Indiana

A Melkite Liturgy at Notre Dame, the old rite in South Bend and Fort Wayne, Polish in Merrillville, Vietnamese in Fort Wayne and French once a month in Indianapolis: Catholics in Indiana pray in many ways. cana.love asks which is yours.

Mass, fasting and Scripture, each asked

On the form, how often you go to Mass has five answers, from every Sunday to rarely, and fasting and Scripture are asked about separately, as is what you hope to find. Every answer has its own setting for who may see it.

Parish and meaning, in your own words

You describe two things in your own words: your parish, and what gives your life meaning. A list would not work where one person's parish is a basilica on a campus and another's is a shrine that prays in Polish.

Spanish is one of five languages

The site is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Russian.

Checked first, free, no password

Profiles and photographs stay hidden until checked, first automatically and then by a person if the automatic check is unsure. Asking members for money is against the rules, and fraud means removal for good, without warning. What cana.love is and is not

cana.love is not a Catholic-only platform.

Orthodox Christians, Protestants and people still finding their church are members as well, provided they want the same kind of marriage, and your settings decide who sees you. The parishes on this page pray in half a dozen languages, and a site that shut others out would be narrower than they are. What cana.love commits to can be checked: faith, practice and intentions are on the form, there to read before you reply. It is run by Cana SpA, a company in Chile; the About page has more.

Meeting safely

  • For a first meeting choose daylight and a public place, and agree a time to leave: coffee after Mass, or a café on Mass Ave in Indianapolis or downtown in South Bend. Tell a friend where you will be and, if it means I-65 or I-69 in the evening, when you expect to be back. Check which time zone the other person means. Keep your address private for now.
  • On money there is one rule: until you have met in person, send none, lend none and pay for nobody's travel, whatever the reason. One report is enough for us to look into it.

The community guidelines explain how reports are handled and how to appeal a decision.

Because Indiana keeps both. The Gary diocese and the Evansville corner are on Central time, the rest of the state on Eastern, and the Evansville diocese marks each schedule accordingly.

Which young adult groups name an age?

St John's in Indianapolis eighteen to thirty-five, the young adults in Vincennes eighteen to thirty-nine, and Rooted in Newburgh nineteen to thirty-nine.

Where is the traditional Latin Mass?

At St Stanislaus in South Bend and Sacred Heart in Fort Wayne, both of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter; at the Czestochowa shrine in Merrillville on Sunday at eight; and a Sunday Latin Mass at noon is listed at Sacred Heart in Evansville.

Is there an Eastern Catholic Liturgy?

A Melkite Divine Liturgy at Notre Dame on Sundays at ten during the academic year.

Are there Masses in other languages?

Spanish in many parishes, Vietnamese at St Patrick in Fort Wayne, Polish at the Merrillville shrine, a Filipino Mass at the Indianapolis cathedral and French at St Monica once a month.

Next steps

In Indianapolis, go to the Sunday evening Mass at St John's and stay for the social. In the south-west, try the Wednesday young adults in Vincennes or Rooted in Newburgh.
