Short answer

In Illinois you find young Catholics through the parish rather than the diocese. The Archdiocese of Chicago's site would not open for us, and two of the state's other dioceses publish no young adult page at all. The parishes do: Holy Name Cathedral says its ministry is for people in their twenties and thirties, St Clement in Lincoln Park describes its group as twenty- and thirty-somethings, and the young adults at St John Cantius give an age of twenty-one to thirty-five.

That is also where the idea of meeting over a drink began. The archdiocese's newspaper, Chicago Catholic, records that Theology on Tap started in 1981 in the Archdiocese of Chicago, as a ministry to young adults.

Seventeen places are listed below with an address and an official link, from Evanston to Carbondale. It is not a directory of every parish. It is a set of doors that people your age actually walk through.

This page sits on cana.love, which is free and meant for people who want to marry. It is not a Catholic-only site, and a section further down says what that means.

Catholics in Illinois

The state has six dioceses: Chicago, Joliet, Rockford, Peoria, Springfield and Belleville. How much each one tells you about young adults varies more than you might expect.

Joliet publishes a list of about twenty parish young adult groups by town, from Aurora to Woodridge, and one of its programmes, the Samuel Group, states an age of twenty-one to thirty-five. Belleville keeps a calendar of dated events with addresses. Peoria's diocesan site has no young adult page; a Peoria parish, St Philomena, describes the diocese's ministry as serving Catholics in their twenties and thirties. Springfield's menu item for young adults leads to a page for teenagers.

From the parishes', the dioceses' and Chicago Catholic's own pages, opened 23 September 2026

Chicago is the harder case, because the archdiocese's own pages answered us with a bot check and we did not read them. So on this page Chicago is described through its parishes, its newspaper and its universities, each of which we could open.

Two more things belong in the background. Peoria's cathedral holds the tomb of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who was born in the Diocese of Peoria; the Sheen foundation's site lists his beatification Mass for 24 September 2026 in St Louis, with Masses of thanksgiving in Peoria on the 25th and 26th. And the traditional Latin Mass in Illinois comes with a detail worth knowing before you plan a Sunday, set out further down.

Where the community gathers

The seventeen places fall into five parts of the state: the city of Chicago, Evanston and the Joliet suburbs, the north-west, central Illinois, and the south.

The city of Chicago

The city of Chicago holds four. Holy Name Cathedral in River North has a young adult ministry with a monthly gathering after its first-Sunday evening Mass; St John Cantius in River West is the Canons Regular's Latin Mass church; St Clement in Lincoln Park runs a young adult community around its late Sunday Masses; and Loyola University's Madonna della Strada Chapel stands on the lake at Rogers Park.

Evanston and the Joliet suburbs

Evanston and the Joliet suburbs hold three. Northwestern's Sheil Catholic Center is on Sheridan Road in Evanston, a walk from the Noyes station on the Purple Line. The Diocese of Joliet runs its young adult ministry from Crest Hill, and the Fraternity of St Peter keeps St Joseph in Rockdale, just outside Joliet.

The north-west

The north-west holds two: the Institute of Christ the King's St Mary Oratory in Rockford, and the Newman Center at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Central Illinois

Central Illinois holds six. In Peoria, the cathedral with Archbishop Sheen's tomb; in Champaign, St John's Catholic Newman Center at the University of Illinois; in Springfield, the diocesan cathedral and Sacred Heart, where the Canons Regular also serve; in Quincy, St Rose of Lima, a Fraternity of St Peter parish; and in Charleston, the Newman community of Eastern Illinois University.

The south

The south holds two: the Diocese of Belleville's young adult ministry, whose calendar includes a first-Tuesday holy hour and social at St Clare in O'Fallon, and the Newman Center at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Some places are left out on purpose. The Shrine of Christ the King in Woodlawn, the Institute of Christ the King's American headquarters, suspended its public Masses in 2022 according to EWTN News, and we could not confirm its current timetable. The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville has a page on the diocese's site, but its own site would not open and we could not confirm its street address. And one domain you may find in search results for Chicago's Theology on Tap is now for sale, so it is not linked here.

Distances that decide everything

A diagram, not a map. Driving times without traffic.

Chicago to Evanston is about half an hour, and to Joliet about an hour. DeKalb is an hour and a half west, and Rockford nearly two hours. Champaign is close to three hours south; Peoria is over three hours, and Springfield about four. Belleville, at the far end of the state, is nearly six hours from Chicago by car.

So Illinois is one state and several separate worlds. Downstate, Peoria, Champaign and Springfield are each an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters from the other two; Belleville and Carbondale are about two hours apart. Somebody in the Loop and somebody in Carbondale are not going to share Sunday Mass without one of them moving.

That is worth asking before anything else, and it is on the cana.love form: where you live, and whether you would move.

The Catholic year in Illinois

First Sunday

Holy Name's monthly gathering

It follows the 5:15 p.m. Mass on the first Sunday of the month. At Cantius in Chicago and Sacred Heart in Springfield, the Latin Masses that day use the 2002 Missal instead of the 1962 one, so check before you plan.

Twice a month

St Clement's plaza socials

Twice a month, after the late Sunday Masses.

Tuesdays

Bible study at Holy Name

For the cathedral's young adults, at the rectory.

First Tuesday

Holy hour in O'Fallon

At St Clare, followed by a social, from the Diocese of Belleville's young adult ministry.

Term

The Newman centers

The ones in Evanston, Champaign, DeKalb, Charleston and Carbondale run on term.

25–26 September

Thanksgiving for Fulton Sheen

The Sheen foundation lists Masses of thanksgiving in Peoria on 25 and 26 September, after the beatification Mass in St Louis.

Dating as a practising Catholic in Illinois

A cathedral that names an age range, a Lincoln Park parish that names a decade, a Latin Mass group that names twenty-one to thirty-five: in Illinois the parish says who the group is for. On cana.love the form asks the rest.

Mass, fasting and Scripture, each asked

It asks how often you go to Mass, with five settings from every Sunday down to rarely, and it asks about fasting and Scripture separately. It asks what you are on the site for. Each answer has its own visibility setting, chosen by you.

Two questions in your own words

Two of its questions have no options. One asks for your parish in your own words; the other asks what gives your life meaning. In a state where the same young adult may go to a Latin Mass on Sunday morning and a Newman center social on Thursday, a list of options would miss half of it.

Five languages, one of them Spanish

The site runs in five languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Russian. That matters in a state where the Peoria cathedral has a Sunday Mass in Spanish.

Checked first, free, no password

Every profile and photograph is checked before anyone can see it, by an automatic check first and a person for anything it cannot decide. Asking another member for money is against the published rules, and fraud means permanent removal without a warning. Joining is free, with no subscription, and there is no password: you sign in with a one-time link or code sent to your email.

What cana.love is and is not

cana.love is not a Catholic-only platform.

Orthodox Christians, Protestants and people still finding their place are on it too, if they want the same kind of marriage, and your own settings decide who sees you. The parishes on this page open their doors to newcomers and to people asking questions, and a site that sealed itself off would promise less than they do. What cana.love does promise can be checked: faith, practice and intention are questions on the form, and the answers are there to read before you reply. It is run by Cana SpA, a company in Chile; the About page has the rest.

Meeting safely

  • Meet for the first time in daylight, in public, with a finishing time agreed: the plaza after the late Mass at St Clement, a café near the Newman center, a walk along the lakefront. Tell a friend where you will be, and if the date involves a train or a long drive, tell them when you expect to be back. Your home address can wait.
  • On money there is nothing to discuss. Until you have met in person, send nothing, lend nothing and pay for no one's ticket, however urgent the story. One report is enough for it to be looked into.

How reports are handled, and how a decision can be appealed, is set out in the community guidelines.

Common questions

Is there a young adult group in Chicago with a stated age range?

Yes. Holy Name Cathedral names its ministry for people in their twenties and thirties, with events for ages eighteen to forty, and the Peter and Paul group at St John Cantius says twenty-one to thirty-five.

Where can I find the traditional Latin Mass?

On this page: St John Cantius in Chicago, St Joseph in Rockdale, St Mary Oratory in Rockford, Sacred Heart in Springfield and St Rose of Lima in Quincy. At Cantius and Sacred Heart, the first Sunday of the month uses the 2002 Missal.

I live in the suburbs west of Chicago. Where do I start?

The Diocese of Joliet's young adult page lists about twenty parish groups by town, from Aurora and Naperville to Wheaton and Woodridge.

Is there anything downstate?

Yes. The Newman centers in Champaign, Charleston and Carbondale, the cathedral in Peoria, and the Diocese of Belleville's calendar of events.

Why is the Archdiocese of Chicago not linked?

Its site answered us with a bot check, so we did not read it. Everything on this page about Chicago comes from pages we could open: the parishes, the universities and the archdiocese's newspaper.

Can I use cana.love anywhere in Illinois?

Yes, from eighteen. It is a website, so there is nothing to install.

Next steps

If you are in Chicago, go to Holy Name's first-Sunday gathering or one of St Clement's plaza socials; if you are in the west suburbs, pick one group from Joliet's list and go twice. And if you would rather know where someone stands before the first coffee than after it, make a profile on cana.love: it is free, and it asks what a parish social does not.
